A man has been charged with drunk driving after a New Year’s Day crash left another man clinging to life in hospital.

The crash happened Wednesday at 6 p.m. when a 2010 Dodge Ram travelling southbound in the 9600 block of Metis Tr. N.E. crossed the centre line, side-swiping a 2013 Mazda A 3I carrying two people.

The truck continued northbound, colliding with a 2011 BMW 328XI with two people inside. The truck was then struck by an oncoming car with four passengers.

The driver of the BMW, a 20-yearold man, is in critical condition with life-threatening injuries. His passenger, an 18-year-old woman, sustained minor injuries.

The driver of the Dodge Ram, Kulwinder Singh Chohan, 36, of Calgary, has been charged with impaired driving, impaired driving over 0.08 and impaired driving causing injury.

Sgt. Colin Foster of the traffic unit said, “It’s very frustrating. We’ve had a very high-profile, drink-drive campaign, enhanced checkstops during the Christmas period, checkstops running year round and we’re at the start of 2014 with a critical-injury collision because somebody decided to drink and drive.”
