Star Trek dream
Re: “You can’t have your cake and post pictures of it, too,” Naomi Lakritz, Opinion, Dec. 23.
I can just imagine Naomi Lakritz sitting primly on a Devonian Gardens bench, gloved hands resting gently on her little purse. Not reading a book or a newspaper, mind you, just enjoying the surroundings and tuttutting the youngsters with noses buried in their devices.
Having lived 70 per cent of my life in the last century, but raised on Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek view of the future, I dreamed of the day when a small hand-held device informed me about the world. It alerts me of the Northern Lights or a meteor shower. It identifies constellations or birds and their songs. Weather, ski conditions, grizzly activity — the list is endless.
I swiftly access a library beyond the wildest dreams of any Victorian bibliophile. Now then, where is my flying car?
