Police have seven people in custody after a home and garage in Marlborough were hit by bullets early Sunday and a vehicle was stolen.

It is believed six people were asleep inside the home when the incident occurred, said duty inspector Joel Matthews. No one was injured.

Police spent Sunday interviewing witnesses, including the home’s occupants, as they worked to piece together what happened and determine if the gunfire was targeted.

“We would suspect there was a reason for it but we don’t have that information yet,” said Matthews.

Police received a call around 6:20 a.m. Sunday regarding a break and enter at a home and attached garage in the 100 block of Manora Hill N.E. Shortly after the initial call came in, police received a call that gunshots had been fired at the same location.

When police arrived, the offend- ers had fled and a previously stolen vehicle — a white extended cab — was found abandoned nearby. Police believe the suspects arrived in a stolen vehicle and left in a different stolen vehicle as a light blue Ford 150 was reported stolen from the area.

Duty inspector Nancy Farmer said police have seven people in custody, but she would not say if they were suspects or persons of interest. Based on witness accounts, police believe more than one person was involved, though no charges have been laid.

Matthews said the home that was shot at isn’t known to police but some of the occupants inside the home are.

He said it’s fortunate that no one was hurt.

“It’s a huge concern. There’s no way that people shooting the guns know where those bullets are going when they’re shooting through doors or they’re shooting in the community,” he said.
