A bloodied driver collapsed along Memorial Drive on Tuesday after an odd series of events in which a camper fell off the back of his pickup truck, which continued driving, smashing into three parked vehicles before coming to a stop 16 blocks away.

Police say the driver got out of the truck and walked a short distance before collapsing with blood visible on his face.

He was taken to Foothills Hospital. As of Wednesday morning, he was conscious and in stable condition, police said.

The incident started at about 10:30 p.m. when the camper fell off the back of a pickup truck and ended up in the middle of the intersection of Memorial Drive and 36th Street N.E. in the Marlborough community, said duty inspector Jason Bobrowich.

Bobrowich said police cruisers and the HAWCS helicopter located the truck, and a traffic stop was attempted.

“The driver did not stop,” he said.

The truck continued driving, striking three vehicles, before coming to a stop in the area of Memorial Drive and 52nd Street N.E.

The man “travelled a short distance on foot” before collapsing, Bobrowich said.

“Officers did note a large amount of blood on the face of this person,” he said, adding it’s not known if the man sustained injuries in the incident or had suffered a previous medical condition.

The incident remains under investigation.
