Police identify man found dead in gravel pit

The last hours and days of a homeless man found dead at a southeast Calgary industrial site may hold the key to determining if the case involves foul play.

Workers at a gravel storage depot in the 4500 block of Barlow Trail S.E., near Deerfoot Trail, found the body of Troy Michael Rawcliffe shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday.

An autopsy has determined how Rawcliffe, 46, died, but police are withholding that information as they try to piece together his final movements and whether his death was criminal.

“We have nothing to definitively say one way or the other,” said Staff Sgt. Colin Chisholm of the Calgary police homicide unit.

Rawcliffe’s family last saw him about two weeks ago, but didn’t report him missing because it wasn’t unusual for them to go that length of time without hearing from him.

“He lived alone. He was homeless at the time,” said Chisholm. The autopsy could only determine Rawcliffe had been dead “a number of days to a number of weeks” prior to workers finding his body Tuesday, Chisholm said.

“We’re looking for individuals who may know him, who may have saw him, to give us those closing details,” he said.

Meanwhile, the deaths of two other men found dead in the city’s southeast on Tuesday have been determined to be non-criminal following autopsies conducted Wednesday.

One of the men was found dead in a car in the Blackfoot Diner parking lot in the 1800 block of 9th Avenue S.E. The other man was discovered in a vehicle in the 4900 block of Barlow Trail S.E. At the time, police said the death appeared to be medically related.
