Alien enemies

- THIS IS AN EXCERPT FROM AN EDITORIAL PUBLISHED IN THE CALGARY HERALD ON MAY 10, 1915.

At tonight’s meeting of the city council, there will probably be some discussion over the number of Germans and Austrians, alien enemies, who are securing jobs in the various municipal departments.

The city council laid down a definite policy for the conduct of the labour bureau. It was to be first come, first served ... At a time like the present when we are not only at war with Germany and Austria, but when the former nation by its ... policy of open murder of civilians and innocent women and children forfeits all rights to consideration for its people, there is no doubt that the public demand that Germans and Austrians in this country be shown as little consideration as possible, be acceded to by all constituted authorities.

A safe lodgment in an internment camp and a diet of bread and water, with a chunk of meat now and again, instead of good city jobs, is about all they are entitled to.

It has been suggested that aldermen are slow to shut them off city work on account of the strength of their vote, a large number being property owners and on the municipal ratepayers’ list.

The Herald will advocate ... that every German or Austrian property owner or tenant qualified for the city, provincial or federal voters’ list, should have his name stricken from the roll unless he can produce naturalization papers.

The time for kid-glove handling of this question has passed ... Judging by the expressions of sentiment heard in Calgary, the people are in no mood for procrastination on the part of city council. Aldermen had therefore better take warning.
