Strong weekend for Calgary squads

-

CAMPUS • It was a great weekend for men’s hockey on campuses around the city.

All three schools — the University of Calgary, Mount Royal and SAIT — fi nished perfect as their respective seasons opened.

The Dinos knocked off the Manitoba Bisons twice, completing the sweep with a 4- 1 win on Saturday after beating them 6- 1 on Friday.

“Sweeping a weekend is a tough thing to do in our league, especially to start the season when our game isn’t fi ne- tuned yet, so I am defi nitely happy with the four points,” said Dinos head coach Mark Howell.

Over at Mount Royal, the Cougars matched the Dinos on the ice, also sweeping the opening weekend, whipping Lethbridge 7- 2 on Saturday night after blanking them 2- 0 on Thursday.

And at SAIT, the Trojans also went 2- 0, punctuating the opening weekend of the season with an eight- goal fi rst period on Saturday, en route to a 12- 5 win over Portage College.

“We talked about it before when we had a ton of shots last night, but weren’t getting a lot of traffi c to the net,” said Trojans head coach Dan Olsen after also beating the Voyageurs 4- 1 on Friday.

AROUND THE HORN ... The Dinos women’s soccer team suffered its fi rst defeat of the season, a 1- 0 setback at the hands of the Regina Cougars ... SAIT’s Sara Hewitt won the third ACAC Grand Prix cross- country running race of the season in Red Deer.

Her time of 19: 56 in the 5 kilometre race helped the Trojans fi nish second ... Reghan Zilkie headed in a corner kick in the 87th minute to give the MRU Cougars women a 3- 2 soccer win over Manitoba to snap a fourgame losing streak.
