Body found ruled a targeted attack

- ERIKA STARK

Police say the man whose body was found at Canada Olympic Park early Wednesday morning was the victim of a targeted attack.

At around 2:30 a.m., a passerby came across the body of 25-yearold Mohameddek Ali Mohamud near 85th Street and Canada Olympic View S.W., near the ski jump area at the park.

“We do believe at this time due to the circumstances, this was not a random attack,” said Acting Staff Sergeant Kurt Jacobs of the Homicide Unit. Police have interviewed the passerby who found Mohamud’s body, and he is not a person of interest.

The homicide unit is investigating and police are asking anyone who saw anything unusual in the area between 11 p.m. Tuesday and 2:30 a.m. Wednesday to come forward.

“Anyone who resides or was in the area of Canada Olympic Park at the north end of 85th Street who have seen, heard anything that may be suspicious, please give us a call,” Jacobs said. “People think their information may not be significant, but it may be a piece that we’re looking for.”

Family friend and local Imam Abdi Hersy said Mohamud took a phone call late Tuesday night before leaving the house. He never returned.

Jacobs couldn’t comment on the alleged phone call, but said investigators are following up a number of leads, including security camera footage in the area.

It’s not clear how Mohamud died, and whether he was killed where his body was found.

“In this particular incident, in- vestigators are still trying to piece that together,” Jacobs said. “However, generally speaking, in violent attacks or homicides, there’s always a possibility that there is more than one scene.”

At this time, police are not investigating a second scene, he added.

This is Calgary’s seventh homicide of 2015.
