The best part of writing Aly’s Favourite Things is that I get to share with you all of the items I discover on my travels and at work. And with the opening of KIYA Home in their new Deerfoot Meadows location, many of my favourite things will be available in one place.
The first collection is themed “Made in Canada.” It includes items made by some amazing artists and designers from across the country. All items are hand-crafted and have a story — something that’s terrific to buy whenever possible.
ZOE PAWLAK
A contemporary artist and rug designer, Zoe works with private clients, interior designers, and select brands. Zoe has made an amazing name for herself in North America, with her work represented in Vancouver, Montreal, New York City, Newport Beach, Whistler and now Calgary. Her collection, called Lifted, is exclusive to CURATE. This gorgeous collection is hand drawn with chalk.
BANOEMMEE
Specializing in leather goods, BanoEmmee creates luxe hand-burnished genuine leather jackets, immaculately tailored blazers, and structured mixed media clothing. My obsession with bow ties is what drew me to this line and CURATE will carry a fabulous collection in gorgeous saturated colours. A must have for any fashion lover.
VANCOUVER CANDLE COMPANY
Everyone who knows me knows that I love a great-smelling candle. I discovered the Vancouver Candle Co. on social media and as soon as I saw that each one was hand made with premium soy wax blends, lead free cotton wicks, and re-usable drinking glasses, they were a must-have for the CURATE collection.
REKINDLE
Its philosophy is all about passing down items to family and friends increasing the items’ personal value, as they become a memory of you. This drew me in, along with their use of natural materials that will age beautifully through everyday use. The All Plates would make the perfect gift for any host or hostess (and, of course, one in every colour for yourself ).
LINT AND HONEY
Always starting collections with a hand-drawn sketch, Lint and Honey pieces always have a handmade but refined look. I love the organic quality of the designs. Looking for inspirations in the imperfect things in life is what drew me to this textile collection. The simple lines and forms are fit for any well decorated home.
CARL & ROSE
Individually, Noah and Suzanne from Carl & Rose are award-winning artists, and together they produce functional items, objects, and installations based on their unique vision. Playful and bold, each piece is made with care and can infuse any setting with a little extra joy. I was introduced to them at a recent design show and could not get enough of their juicy colours. I also love how they fuse vintage objects to create unique and oneof-a-kind creations.
