Diplomat’s teen son charged with murder
The teenage son of a Canadian diplomat was charged Wednesday with first- degree felony murder and attempted murder for his role in a drug- related shootout that killed his older brother and another teenager in Miami, Fla. He’s been charged as an adult. A Miami- Dade grand jury returned the indictment for 15- yearold Marc Wabafiyebazu, who was arrested March 30 after the shooting deaths of his 17- year- old brother, Jean, and 17- year- old Joshua Wright.
Wabafiyebazu is the son of Roxanne Dube, Canada’s consul general in Miami.
Wabafiyebazu, who is being held in juvenile detention, will now be moved to an adult jail to await trial.
Wabafiyebazu’s lawyer has previously said his client intends to plead not guilty to any charges.
Police allege the Wabafiyebazu brothers were involved in a drug deal gone wrong.
Investigators say the brothers went to a home to steal marijuana from a dealer. While the younger sibling waited with the car outside, the older teen went inside.
Shots were fired inside the home, police say. Marc Wabafiyebazu rushed into the house, but exactly what he did after that isn’t clear.
Officers at the scene found the older Wabafiyebazu and Wright dead inside. It’s alleged they shot each other.
The grand jury also indicted two other young men involved in the drug deal on felony murder charges: Anthony Rodriguez, 19, and 21- year- old Johann Ruiz. Under Florida law, all suspects involved in committing a crime can be charged with murder if it leads to a killing.
Marc Wabafiyebazu is also charged with attempted murder for allegedly shooting at Rodriguez.
