HBO miniseries holds weekend casting call

Natives and rugged outdoorsmen needed for roles in Lewis and Clark

- ERIC VOLMERS

An HBO Miniseries about American explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark will hold a casting call on Sunday for First Nations and Caucasian “outdoor and sports enthusiasts”.

Lewis and Clark will star Casey Affleck and Matthias Schoenaerts and will be produced by Tom Hanks and Brad Pitt. It’s scheduled to shoot in southern Alberta from June 15- Sept. 15.

On Sunday, casting will be held for First Nations men, women and children and Caucasian men aged 20- 35 at the Grey Eagle Resort and Hotel, situated at the corner of Grey Eagle Drive and Glenmore Trail SW.

Auditions for First Nations candidates run from 9 a. m. to 6 p. m. Required are men and women ages 18- 80 and children ages 8- 16.

Auditions for Caucasian men will run from 3- 7 p. m. on Sunday. Men should be fit and active — hunters, mountain bikers, rock climbers, white- water rafters and horseback riders, for instance — with no modern haircuts. Some facial hair may be required and those chosen should be free for steady work throughout the summer.

No Alberta locations have been announced yet. But it’s expected the six- hour miniseries also will shoot in Vancouver and Georgia.

The production has cast a wide net for performers with a First Nations background, with casting calls having been held already in Vancouver and Edmonton.

Lewis and Clark is based on the book Undaunted Courage by Stephen E. Ambrose and will tell the story of America’s “First contact with the land and native tribes of the country west of the Mississippi River.”
