A veteran Sylvan Learning Centres franchisor has stepped up to reopen the northwest Calgary and Airdrie locations that abruptly closed last week.

Jim Argue said Wednesday the Silver Springs location will reopen Monday and he’s working with the lease owners in Airdrie to reopen as soon as possible.

“The corporation came to me and asked me if I would take those centres to help out. So I have done that,” said Argue, who said he’s footing the bill because he believes in the Sylvan model, which he’s taught for 28 years. He runs nine locations near Edmonton and in B. C., and says he’s run a total of 25 centres, including some in Calgary.

“We’re coming in at our own expense, to offer those hours be delivered. So we’re able to get back our staff — they’re excellent staff, they’re experienced. And we’re going to start instruction again this coming Monday, so it’s only over a week it’s been closed.”

Argue says Sylvan has transferred the licence to him and has reduced some of his costs. He said he’s not taking over the company that ran the two centres until suddenly closing them last Thursday.

The move comes after Sylvan sent an email Tuesday to parents, telling them a solution was near.

“We’re doing what we can as responsible Sylvan owners to come in and do this. And we’re much stronger than they are in terms of numbers and experience.”

Argue said he supports how Sylvan handled the situation by “finding a solution as quickly as possible.” He noted that unlike corporations, franchises are wholly owned by local management.

“We’re already calling them, and even though parents are upset — which we understand — the ones we talk to already are quite happy.”
