Family escapes fire at Coventry Hills home

-

A family escaped without harm after a fire broke out at their twostorey home in northeast Calgary early Thursday. Fire crews were called to the residence in the 100 block of Covehaven Gardens N. E. in Coventry Hills around 3: 30 a. m. to respond to the blaze.

When they arrived, they found flames venting from the secondfloor windows facing the street.

Fire spokeswoman Carol Henke said six people — a parent and five children — along with two dogs were home at the time, but they were alerted to the fire by a working smoke alarm and all got out safely before crews arrived.

Another parent and a sixth child were not home at the time, Henke added. Firefighters doused the flames using a deck- mounted water nozzle, and were able to protect the neighbouring homes.

Crews then entered the building to search for residents and extinguish remaining flames. No one was hurt. The cause remains under investigation and fire crews remained at the scene late Thursday morning dousing hot spots.

A damage estimate is not available at this time, although the damage to the home “is extensive,” Henke said.

The fire department is reminding Calgarians to ensure they have a working smoke alarm on every level of their home, to test their alarms once a month, and to replace smoke alarm batteries every year.

Residents should also have a home escape plan.
