Could future roads be made of plastic?
Nearly every driver loves to hate roads for one reason or another, whether it’s over traffic problems or potholes. A Dutch company has a solution for at least one of those problems.
VolkerWessels, working with the city of Rotterdam, proposed a type of road made of plastic. It’s a novel idea: plastic surfaces effectively eliminate costly asphalt maintenance and repairs, while hollow cavities beneath allow space for pipes and wires.
For now, VolkerWessels’ idea is exactly that — an idea. Gizmodo. com says it’s not exactly feasible because prototypes are not yet developed and tested, though the benefits seem to outweigh asphalt by a long shot, especially when it comes to adding and removing roadways. In theory, at least, VolkerWessels’ idea should make installation and maintenance a breeze compared to asphalt, but when that might happen is unknown.
