No disaster

-

Re: “Snow job,” Editorial, July 31.

How ridiculous can our municipal officials get? Mother Nature gave us an unexpected snowfall last September and our mayor made a $27-million disaster relief request to the provincial government. Supposedly, one million trees were damaged or destroyed and our city’s environmental reputation has been compromised. In most cases, it was the homeowners who were responsible for clearing their own properties and streets.

Has Naheed Nenshi forgotten that we live in Canada? Does he not understand the rules of the disaster recovery plan? The former Tory government probably would have granted such a ludicrous request, but as a taxpayer, I agree with the present government’s denial. Am I the only one? Sounds reminiscent of the Toronto 1999 snowstorm year when that mayor requested the army be called in to assist. Ridiculous, wasn’t it?
