Calgary police on hunt for armed robbery suspects

Calgary police believe a group of armed and masked robbers are behind four bank robberies and the holdup of a bank courier over the past month and a half.

One suspect has been arrested but police have released photos of others in hopes that it will lead to tips from the public that could help solve the cases.

Police call the incidents “take over” style robberies where people in the bank were told to put up their hands as the suspects leaped over the counters. The suspects took money from behind the bank counters and sometimes also stole the personal belongings of bank employees. After one of the holdups, a pregnant woman was taken to hospital as a precaution, police said. She has since been released.

The suspects carried guns, wore hoodies and masks in each of these robberies:

Monday, Aug. 17: Two masked men robbed the Scotiabank branch in the 300 block of Cranston Road S. E. around 12: 15 p. m. Thursday, Aug. 20: Two masked men held up the Scotiabank in the 800 block of 19 Street N. E. shortly after 2 p. m. Thursday, Aug. 27: Two masked men, one carrying a shotgun, robbed a bank courier in the parking lot of a bank in the 8200 block of Centre Street N. E. Thursday, Aug. 27: Three men robbed the TD Canada Trust branch in the 1000 block of Panatella Boulevard N. E. around 7: 30 p. m. Police arrested Ryan Daku, 42, of Calgary, at some point after the holdup. He has been charged with three counts of robbery with a firearm and use of a disguise. Police are still trying to find the two other men. Monday, Sept. 14: Two masked men held up the TD Canada Trust branch in the 1600 block of 90 Avenue S. W. around 12: 30 p. m.
