Cyclist, 12, struck by van at crosswalk

-

A 12-year-old boy was seriously hurt Thursday evening after he was struck by a van in northeast Calgary.

Emergency crews responded to Castleridge Boulevard and Westwinds Drive N.E. just after 6:30 p.m. for reports of a collision between a motorist and cyclist.

The 12-year-old boy was transported to hospital in serious, potentially life-threatening condition with concerns for head injuries.

Police say it appears the boy was on a marked crosswalk in the road when he was hit by the driver of the van, who remained at the scene after the crash.

Investigators were called to the scene and shut down nearby traffic while they collected evidence.
