THE RULES OF THE GAME

A roller derby game pits two teams of up to 14 players against each another on an oval track. Five members from each team simultaneously skate counter-clockwise in “jams” that can last up to two minutes.

Each team designates a scoring player (the “jammer”). The other four team members are “blockers.” The jammer scores points by lapping members of the opposing team. Skaters try to impede the opposing jammer while assisting their own jammer.

Each team’s blockers use body contact, changing positions and other tactics to help their jammer score while hindering the opposing team’s jammer. Certain types of blocks and other plays are violations and referees call fouls that send violators to the penalty box.

Games consist of two 30-minute periods.
