THE YEAR OF MUSIC
The Calgary Philharmonic queues up the Berlioz, while Commonwealth’s basement gets whiskey-soaked.
Friday: Symphonie Fantastique
The symphony tells the story of an imaginative artist who has taken to opium to numb the pain of unrequited love. Composer Hector Berlioz really dove into the part: at least part of the symphony was written while he was high on opium. At Jack Singer Concert Hall, Arts Commons. 8 p.m. $20 - $80. 403-571-0849, calgaryphil.com.
Saturday: The Collapse with Liquor Mountain
The local alt-country crew are inspired by the DriveBy Truckers and their portrayal of “the South as a complicated place,” band founder John Hadley tells Beatroute. “We were trying to write about Alberta as a complicated place with that similarity.” At Pizza Bob’s, 2610 Kensington Rd. N.W. 9 p.m. 403-283-2041, pizzabobs.ca.
Tuesday: European Masters
The Calgary Performing Arts Festival (formerly Kiwanis) shows off the young masters of European legends like Mozart, Chopin, Schumann and Grieg. At TransAlta Pavilion, Taylor Centre for Performing Arts, MRU. 7 p.m. Free. 403-283-6009, cpafestival.ca.
Tuesday: No River with St. Groove
The folk rockers specialize in “whiskey-soaked, gravel-voiced boot-stompers,” which you can hear downstairs. Upstairs, you can emulate the music by getting a rinse from the bourbon bar. At Commonwealth Bar & Stage, 731 10th Ave. S.W. 9 p.m. 403-247-4663, commonwealthbar.ca.
Wednesday: Chron Goblin, Double Fuzz and Nosis
It’s Star Wars day (May the 4th) and these three local bands will be rocking the closest thing Calgary has to the Mos Eisley Cantina. Don’t expect any John Williams covers, though. At Ship & Anchor Pub, 534 17th Ave. S.W. 9 p.m. Free. 403-245-3333, shipandanchor.com.
