Daughter charged in mother’s death

Woman had been in argument with parent in Lethbridge, police say

-

Lethbridge police have charged a woman in the stabbing death of her mother Thursday evening.

Officers were called around 9:40 p.m. to respond to a report that a 54-year-old woman had been assaulted at a residence in the 2300 block of 18th Street N.

When they arrived, they found Shelley Kristine Praill suffering from life-threatening injuries.

Praill was taken to the Chinook Regional Hospital where she later died.

“An autopsy was conducted in Calgary today by the Calgary medical examiner’s office and they ruled the death as a homicide as a result of a stabbing,” Staff Sgt. Scott Woods of the Lethbridge police said.

Jessica Lee Ann Praill, 28, was arrested at the scene without incident and later charged with one count of second-degree murder.

She is expected to make her first court appearance on Monday.

“Our investigation determined that the mother and daughter had been in an argument that resulted in the physical altercation and ultimately the death of Shelley Praill,” said Woods.

He added that the investigation revealed there have been some “ongoing issues” over a period of time, which came to a head Thursday night.

This is the second time this month that police in Lethbridge have charged a daughter in her mother’s death.

Just weeks after Lisa Freihaut made a tearful plea for information in the stabbing death of her mother, Irene Carter, the 51-year-old Calgarian was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.

Carter, 78, was discovered in her Lethbridge home on Jan. 17, the southern Alberta city’s first homicide of 2016.

It’s believed she was killed several days prior to that.

She was found by Freihaut’s husband, Dean.

Police believe the daughter was involved in a dispute with her mother over finances and a physical altercation ensued.

Our investigation determined that the mother and daughter had been in an argument that resulted in the physical altercation and ultimately the death of Shelley Praill.
