FIVE FINDS AT SERVANTS SALE

- mjarvie@postmedia.com

This is the last weekend to donate books to the 14th annual Servants Anonymous sale. Books in good condition will be accepted at the Crossroads Market on Blackfoot Trail (1235 26th Ave. S.E.) Saturday through Monday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Organizers are hoping to gather 500,000 books for the sale. These five caught the eye of Michele Jarvie

THE TRANQUILITY AND THE TURBULENCE: THE LIFE AND WORK OF WALTER J. PHILLIPS

This large 1981 art book is priced at $200 and Gerry Morgan doesn’t expect it to take long to sell. “We’ve had it before and it’s quite lovely,” said the longtime volunteer.

The handsome hardcover contains 200 of Phillips’ colour woodcuts and watercolours. Phillips was born in 1884 in the U.S. but emigrated to Canada in 1913.

He came west in the 1940s to work as an art teacher for the Banff Summer School. Morgan says this is a must for the art lover or collector.

PERSONS IN HIDING BY J. EDGAR HOOVER

The infamous director of the FBI penned this hardcover in 1938. It includes his printed signature on the introductory page.

Morgan has seen a first edition of this book sell on the Internet for $140. For anyone who loves crime stories, Hoover takes readers on a rollicking spin through the FBI files.

Chapter by chapter, Hoover highlights famous gangsters and criminals his agents hunted — names like Ma Barker, Babyface Nelson, Dillinger and Machine- Gun Kelly.

ANDY WARHOL, THE RECORD COVERS 1949- 1987

This definitive catalogue assembles the entire collection of record covers attributed to or associated with Andy Warhol, the king of pop art.

The photos and accompanying write-ups focus on the covers designed by Warhol between 1949 and 1987 that are still available on the market.

Warhol, who was 58 when he died in 1987, began his career as a commercial illustrator but found success in merging celebrity culture with marketing and advertising. Some of his most iconic works are of Campbell’s soup cans and Coca-Cola bottles as well as Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley.

LEAVES FROM THE MEDICINE TREE

If your interests run more to local history than pop art, this 1960 book published by the Lethbridge Herald will suit your fancy.

Morgan says it’s the most desirable of all local history books.

“I’ve seen it sell at auction for over $600.” This edition is therefore a steal at $250.

This hard cover book tells the histories of the areas south of Calgary dating back to the early Blackfoot days. Various chapters cover the stories of the people who settled and lived in Okotoks, Highwood, Sheep Creek and Tongue Creek to name a few.

THOMAS THE TANK ENGINE

It’s not old like the little, leather-bound, early 1900s edition of Charles Dickens’ The Old Curiosity Shop in the sale’s rare books section.

But the red hardcover Thomas book is sure to excite any young child as much as Dickens does for fans of classic literature.

The British train stories were created by Reverend Wilbert Awdry and his son Christopher in 1945 and became a much loved series. The books about Thomas and his locomotive friends, Percy and Toby, came to life as a television series in 1979. The shows, and corresponding toys, remain popular today.
