AUBURN BAY’S STIRLING EXAMPLE

Home’s kitchen a strong focal point

- CLAIRE YOUNG

The Stirling is a home that keeps the main level as social as possible.

This floor plan by Cedarglen Homes is on display in Auburn Bay, on a cul-de-sac of lots reserved for zero-lot line front-attached garage homes.

Named for a small town in southern Alberta, the Stirling offers three bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, a front-attached two-car garage and 2,074 square feet.

The front door opens into a small and private foyer with a closet straight ahead.

The stairs to the second floor are on the right, behind which are the mud room, half-bathroom and entrance to the two-car garage.

The foyer opens to the kitchen and great room, an open concept that nonetheless offers some definition between spaces.

This main room at the back of the home is bright and airy.

The kitchen creates the central gravitational pull for the area.

A long quartz-topped island runs lengthwise, holding a double sink, the dishwasher, plenty of storage and seating for four at the extended ledge.

On the wall side of the kitchen, glossy subway tile flows full height behind the stainless steel chimney- style range hood. Tidily framing this side of the kitchen is a bulkhead that meets the tops of the cabinetry, so no dusty and hardto-reach surfaces are left on top.

A tall pantry bookends this space, with the refrigerator on the other side.

The kitchen flows into the dining nook at the back of the house.

With sliding glass doors leading onto a patio, this part of the home is filled with natural light.

Facing the kitchen is the great room, with a horizontal fireplace low on the wall and a television screen above it.

Sectioned off visually with a post and bulkheads is a corner of the room, which could be set up as a more intimate space for visiting, or for a formal dining area.

While the main level is all about social interaction, the pacing is more personal on the second level.

The stairs open into the bonus room, an area large enough for lounging on couches for movie night, but one that doesn’t take its space at the expense of the second bedrooms.

These are located at the front of the house, accessed by going around the stairwell, which is set off with a spindle railing.

A built-in tech desk is in place between the bedrooms and the main bathroom. Also off the bonus room is the upstairs laundry room.

The master bedroom is at the back of the house, a spacious and airy room.

The master ensuite features a dual sink vanity and a full-sized shower.

The walk-in closet is accessed from the ensuite.
