A job fair is positive and very encouraging news right now. And the one to be held Aug. 13-14 at Swan Evergreen Village will offer positions to just under 150 applicants.

The soon-to-be opened seniors community is looking for staff across all departments, including dining room service, culinary staff, building maintenance, health care positions, housekeeping, concierge and hairdressers and estheticians, among other roles.

Good news; and good news for our growing seniors population as the new facility will offer 196 suites of which 64 will be provided through Alberta Health Services (AHS), and 20 will be memory care suites located in a secure area on the ground floor.

Many will have a balcony or walk-out patio and all residents have access to an ensuite 24-hour monitored personal response emergency system.

The purpose-built seniors assisted living residence is being developed by Calgary-based Swan Group and will be operated by Origin Lifetime Enrichment Communities in conjunction with AHS.

The $40-million Swan Evergreen Village was designed by Clem Lau Architects and Designers on a site selected for its prime demographics along Eversyde Way S.E. in the community of Evergreen. The location is close to shopping, community services and major transportation arteries.

The exterior of the building uses a variety of materials including stone and vinyl siding, accentuated with a mansard style roof and decorative dormers at the fourth floor, and a large covered entrance into the lobby.

A large commercial kitchen will service the large contemporary dining room serving full breakfast, lunch and dinner and special dietary plans are easily accommodated. There is also a private dining room that can be reserved for special occasions, and it too is under the experienced eye of Red Seal executive chef Chris Clark.

Amenities include a bistro where coffee, tea and healthy snacks are available, a theatre, music room, games room, arts and crafts room, hair care services and a rooftop garden.

Residents of the AHS-funded suites have begun moving in and they will be fully occupied by the end of September.

A benefit to residents is that there will be no long-term lease obligations; leases can be contracted on a month-to-month basis.

Origin has hired Lisa Wood who has over 35 years experience in the care industry as manager of the property and Ben Giang has been appointed director of care. Giang has been with Origin since he was 15 years old, starting as a dishwasher at its Whitehorn Village in the northeast.

He enjoyed working with residents and staff and studied to be a registered nurse, worked for a time with Alberta Health Services and rejoined Origin as RN Educator at Whitehorn. At Swan Evergreen Village, Giang will provide support for seniors and their families transitioning into supportive living.

Origin is a leader in providing healthy and active lifestyles to seniors across Canada and the new Evergreen property is its fourth in Alberta. It offers activities and services that engage body, mind and spirit of active aging seniors.

Swan Group was established here in 1990 and has been a respected builder of condominium projects including Swan Landing at Rocky Ridge and

One of the oldest hotels in the province is for sale. The Canmore Hotel, built by French nobleman Count Eugene de Rambouville and completed in 1890, is being marketed by Walsh Mannas and the Calgary capital markets group at Avison Young. List price for the judicial sale is $3 million.

A former haven for miners and musicians, the heritage building is in the heart of the town on the high profile corner of Main Street and 7th Avenue. Today it still houses a busy pub that is being run by the Black Pig Bistro in Calgary, the popular establishment on 1st Avenue N.E. in Bridgeland.

The second floor has a number of rooms with shared bathrooms, but could perhaps be remodelled by a new owner as a hostel or converted for office use. The property also includes a strip of adjacent land that has received approval for a three-storey addition.
