Acing a 50 million-1 shot: Consecutive holes in one for Calgary’s Nick Bobyk

Nick Bobyk notched an ace.

And, on his very next swing, another.

The 20-year-old from Calgary achieved a remarkable — almost unfathomable — feat during a July 29 spin of the par-3 Course at McCall Lake, sinking consecutive holes-in-one on the seventh and eighth assignments.

“One person said you have a better chance of winning the U.S. Powerball than getting back-toback holes-in-one,” said Bobyk, a Pinebrook member who is prepping for his third season with the University of Calgary Dinos golf squad. “I’m kind of upset because I feel like I’ve peaked now. I’m worried my luck has run out.”

Bobyk is an instructor at the University of Calgary’s summer golf camps, and he certainly put on a clinic for three youngsters that day at McCall Lake.

Currently a two-handicap, Bobyk guesstimated that the flag was about 145 yards away on No. 7 and hit a perfect pitching wedge, watching his ball touch down five feet short of the 41/4-inch target and roll into the cup for his first career ace.

He waited mere minutes for his second.

Figuring that he needed about 110 yards on No. 8, Bobyk selected a sand-wedge and slam-dunked his tee-shot. Didn’t even bounce.

“The first one went in and I was pretty excited, but it wasn’t too big of a deal. But once that second one went in, I was pretty amazed,” said Bobyk, who fired a 6-under 21 on the nine-hole municipal shortcourse. “I posted a picture on social media and it kind of went insane. I’ve been having people text me, and they work at golf courses all over the city, and they say people are talking about it there. It’s crazy.”

European Tour pro John Hutson made consecutive holes-in-one in a tournament in England in 1971 — one on a Par-3 and another on a Par-4. Golf Digest estimated the odds of that feat at 50-million-to-1.
