Police arrested the man wanted in a northeast Calgary double stabbing Tuesday afternoon after a member of the public spotted him walking on the highway.

The tip came in at about 3:30 p.m., after someone saw Qisong Zhou, 50, strolling along Deerfoot Trail. Zhou was arrested without incident a half-hour later on the same road, near Beddington Trail in the city’s northwest.

“Public tips played a crucial rule in locating the suspect,” said Det. Tom Bain of the Calgary Police Service’s general investigations section.

The two-day search for Zhou was sparked Monday morning, after a man and woman inside a house on the 200 block of Huntcroft Road N.E. were stabbed. Though the man was initially in life-threatening condition, Bain said both were in serious but stable condition Tuesday evening.

“Investigators are working with them right now,” he said.

“There are some language barriers we’re trying to overcome.”

Three children and two other adults were inside the house at the time, but were unharmed. One of the children was asleep when the incident happened, while the others were in a separate suite and didn’t see the stabbing.

Earlier Tuesday, police had released CCTV images showing Zhou withdrawing cash at a Royal Bank in Beddington.

Zhou, of Calgary, is charged with two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, one count of attempted murder and one count of assault with a weapon
