Man accused of cutting up corpse faces bail again

The man accused of dismembering a human body will face a second bail hearing later this month after he allegedly breached the conditions of his first one.

Joshua Jordan Weise appeared briefly in Calgary provincial court on Tuesday, where defence lawyer Michael Miller scheduled a release hearing for Aug. 29.

“I have instructions (from lead counsel Rebecca Snukal) to request that Mr. Weise’s matter be adjourned to Aug. 29 ... for the purpose of a bail hearing,” Miller told Judge Bill Cummings.

Crown prosecutor Ken McCaffrey, who earlier consented to Weise’s release on a charge of interfering with a dead body, has said he will now oppose bail and ask that the earlier release order be revoked.

Family and friends of Joey English, whose body parts were found in a Crescent Heights park in June, were in court on July 7 when McCaffrey said he could see no lawful reason to seek Weise’s detention pending trial.

“Mr. Weise is charged with interfering with the human body of Joey English, and the Crown at this time has no evidence of anything (more) than that,” he told court.

“I feel that I must consent to this person’s release,” he said, much to the disdain of the dead woman’s supporters.

But McCaffrey warned he wouldn’t be so benevolent if Weise breached his release conditions — an allegation he now faces.

After Weise was originally released, English’s cousin, Brailon English, said he was “disgusted” at the thought someone accused of dismembering a body could be freed on bail.
