Calgary needs a food bank for pets

-

Re: “Economic downturn forces people to give up pets,” Monday, Sept. 19

I was very saddened to see the article about people giving up beloved animals to the humane society as they cannot afford to feed them.

It is also upsetting to the animal left behind. The humane society should set up an animal food bank rather than accept more animals that cost a lot more to feed and house than a bag of food. In this economic crisis, there must be something that can be done.

Get donations from pet food companies, set up a donation box at pet stores and fundraise. There should be a permanent animal food bank.

People donated food for pets during the Fort McMurray fires. Donation drives like the recent one for the Calgary Food Bank could get this started, and then the humane society could continue providing food.

Please, people, help feed the animals so they can remain with their loved ones, especially during these stressful times, as pets provide wonderful comfort. Sue Timmins, Calgary
