Mom who lost son says her heart breaks for family involved in fatal crash Sunday

- RYAN RUMBOLT

The mother of a young man killed in a wreck with a drunk driver said she feels for a family who lost their son to a suspected drunk driver Sunday.

Kim Thomas’ son Brandon, 17, was killed in 2012 when an impaired driver crashed into his car while headed home from work.

“My heart breaks for this family because I know where they are,” Thomas said. “I know how they’re feeling today. And not only are they going to live the rest of their life without their son ... but they have yet to go through the devastating court process.”

Ryan Gibson was sentenced to 32 months in prison for his role in the crash that killed Brandon Thomas, but Gibson spent fewer than six months behind bars.

Early Sunday, a family was driving home when a Dodge Journey ran a red light and T-boned the family’s Kia Forte on Metis Trail and Country Hills Boulevard N.E.

The 19-year-old son riding in the front passenger seat of the Kia died at the scene.

The 28-year-old driver of the Dodge was taken into custody, but she was later released pending an investigation.

“We are confident alcohol is definitely involved and we’re confident some degree of speed is involved,” Calgary police Sgt. Paul Stacey said.

Police said no charges have yet been laid, but Stacey said “charges are pending, it’s fair to say.”

Stacey said the father and mother were in critical condition, and their daughter has been “badly injured.”

The parents’ condition was so dire it was not possible to inform them of the death of their son.
