MOON CALLS OUT QB PLAY

Hall of Famer offers solution

Hall of Famer Warren Moon believes he has the answer to the National Football League’s declining popularity.

What football needs, he says, is a minor league system like baseball to develop players, particularly quarterbacks.

Moon told USA Today there aren’t enough good quarterbacks and it’s bringing the product, and as a result TV ratings, down.

“There’s a lot of bad quarterbacking out there, Moon said.

“The NFL needs a farm system, like it used to have with NFL Europe. It gives them those reps. Think about guys like Kurt Warner, Jon Kitna and Brad Johnson, who all played overseas and benefited.”

Establishing and running such a farm system would be expensive. Unless... the CFL is already established.

Just make a few rule changes, and... nah! It’ll never happen.

And, then you remember, that’s what they said about walking on the moon.

C.J. Spiller has one touchdown this season — and it came against his current team.

The speedy running back caught a pass from Russell Wilson while he was with the Seattle Seahawks in Week 4 and took it eight yards for a score to help beat the New York Jets 27-17. Just over a month later, Spiller is sharing a lockerroom with Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Jets, and they’ve been sure to remind him of it.

Spiller started the season with New Orleans, which released him on Sept. 13. He was signed by Seattle on Sept. 28, and made his Seahawks debut against the Jets on Oct. 2. But he played in only two games with Seattle, gaining nine yards on three carries and catching five passes for 43 yards and that lone TD. The Seahawks cut him last Wednesday. The Jets signed him Thursday.

INS AND OUTS

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (torn meniscus) is “on track to start Sunday” the Pittsburgh Post- Gazette reported Thursday... LeSean McCoy practised on a limited basis Thursday after missing Buffalo’s loss to the Patriots Sunday with a hamstring. “We’ll see how he progresses, but obviously it’s a positive sign,” Bills coach Rex Ryan said. Defensive tackle Marcell Dareus, who finally made it back into the lineup last week, missed practice again. There’s little optimism he’ll play Monday....Tony Romo won’t be the Dallas quarterback Sunday in Cleveland, but he was back running the Dallas scout team on the practice field, getting his first snaps in since suffering a back injury in pre-season.
