Prosecutor says teenager was killed in ‘six-on-two group attack’
Juliano Crawford-Vieira was stabbed to death when he and a friend were mobbed by six attackers, including accused killer Trent Guy Hynne, court was told Monday.
At the start of a second-degree murder trial, Crown prosecutor Meagan Blake said a fight at a house party on March 8, 2014 escalated with Crawford-Vieira, 17, and friend Orest Tako badly outnumbered.
“What began as a six-on-four screaming match quickly became a six-on-two group attack wherein members of the attacking group pursued Crawford-Vieira and Tko,” she said in her opening argument.
“The attack was a continuation of a dispute several weeks earlier at Lord Beaverbrook high school.”
Taco, 17, survived the stabbing that occurred in a home in the 11400 block of Braniff Green S.W. and Hynne, 21, is charged with attempting to murder him.
Crawford-Vieiro was stabbed four times and “took his last breath as the EMT arrived. Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.”
Blake said two bystanders shot cellphone video of the attack which will be shown during the trial.
Court will also hear how Hynne bragged about the stabbings but also tried to cover them up, said Blake.
“He took steps to conceal forensic evidence on that knife,” said Blake.
Roland Keith Smith, 19, was initially charged with the same two offences but they were reduced following a preliminary inquiry.
On Monday, Blake said he’ll plead guilty to accessory after the fact, with his case to be heard next month.
The trial is expected to take two weeks and continues on Tuesday.
