New parents Tserennadmid Bayar and Steven Boudreau had a welcome surprise when Bayar went into labour on New Year’s Eve.

Weighing in at six pounds, seven ounces and measuring 21 inches long, the first new Calgarian to greet the world in 2017 is Louie Boudreau.

Born at 12:02 a.m. on New Year’s Day, Louie was not expected to greet the word until Jan. 9.

“I’m feeling really happy and excited,” new mom Bayar said. “It’s really good that he came on New Year’s Day because it’s like a gift for us.”

With New Year’s Eve on Dec. 31, Louie’s birthday on Jan. 1 and Louie’s grandfather’s birthday the next day on Jan. 2, Bayar said ringing in the new year will now be a threeday celebration for the family.

“It’s exciting and it’s good to have a new start,” said proud papa Boudreau.

“A fresh beginning with a new child and new family.”

Louie also had his two grandmothers on hand to help Boudreau and Bayar settle into their roles as new parents. Because Louie was born about a week earlier than expected, family members had to make quick adjustments to travel plans to come and meet the New Year’s baby.

“I came on the five o’clock flight (Saturday night) from Saskatoon because she said she was having contractions,” Steven’s mother and first-time grandmother Bernadine Boudreau said. “So I got here as fast as I could.”

“He’s calm, very content,” added Amy Tseveen, Louie’s other grandmother and mother to Bayar. “He doesn’t cry, eats well, so we are happy.”

Boudreau is originally from Saskatchewan and Bayar is from Mongolia, but the couple now calls Calgary home, adding they met through mutual friends.

“We know everyone’s going to celebrate his birthday’s countdown with him,” Boudreau said with a chuckle.
