Snow day on Sunday a global celebration

- MICHELE JARVIE

The world is celebrating snow day and Calgary-area skill hills are getting on board.

Both WinSport and Lake Louise are throwing open their slopes to kids this Sunday when children under 12 can ski or snowboard for free when accompanied by a paying adult.

At Canada Olympic Park, participants can try out a special snowboarding area sponsored by Burton called Riglet Park. Another partner, Rossignol, will be on hand with demos of 2016-17 performance skis that people can try. In addition to the ski and snowboard hills, the new Acura Tube Park will be open, at regular rates, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In lieu of the usual child ski fee, WinSport is asking participants to make a nominal donation with proceeds going to its programs. It’s also working with local organizations to give underprivileged kids and new Canadians a chance to experience snow sports for the first time.

COP visitors are encouraged to tag their social media posts that day with @winsportcanada and include the hashtag #WSD for a chance to win prizes.

Out at Lake Louise, there’s a number of deals including the free lift passes for kids under 12 if they’re with a paying adult. There’s $10 snow tubing all weekend with the purchase of one adult lift ticket, a 2 for 1 offer on the sightseeing gondola, and 20 per cent off Discover Ski & Snowboard lessons — but you must mention FIS World Snow Day when booking.

As it’s a global initiative, Lake Louise is encouraging skiers and boarders to show their national pride by wearing red and white, bringing flags and painting their faces, with prizes for most spirit and best dressed!

The International Ski Federation created World Snow Day six years ago to get people out enjoying winter and the snow. WinSport’s event at Canada Olympic Park is one of 478 taking place in 46 countries around the world.
