FIVE BANDS TO SEE

-

TUNS

The term ‘supergroup’ gets thrown around a bit too often perhaps, but for those whose musical tastes were shaped by ’90s college radio, TUNS is a legitimate dream team. Formed in 2015, the band features Sloan bassist and singer Chris Murphy, as well as Matt Murphy (no relation) of The Super Friendz/ The Flashing Lights fame and Mike O’Neill of The Inbreds.

Fans of the trio’s other projects will find lots to love in TUNS’ tight harmonies, big riffs, catchy hooks and overall power pop goodness.

Port Juvee

One of Calgary’s most buzzworthy bands, Port Juvee has earned praise across the country since the release of its new EP, Crimewave, late last year. And rightfully so. Part new-millennium garage rock, part post-punk and indie rock with some melodic jangle pop thrown in for good measure, Port Juvee’s songs are as memorable as they are instantly likable.

Peter & The Wolves

They formed just three years ago, but Calgary’s Peter & The Wolves have already positioned themselves as Western Canada’s brightest rockabilly talents.

Led by charismatic singer, guitarist and songwriter Peter Cormier, the group’s two albums — Here Comes Peter & The Wolves and Papa’s Goin’ Out of Town — and live shows encapsulate the energy and excitement of early rock ’n’ roll.

Holy F**k

If previous Holy F*** shows are anything to go by, then there’s going to be an earmelting, eye-popping riot of sound and vision at Dickens Pub on Jan. 20. The innovative Toronto electronica band released its latest dance-punk opus, Congrats, last year and this show is one of very few performances they’re doing this winter.

All Hands On Jane

The four talented women who make up Calgary’s All Hands On Jane take no prisoners when they play their fiery mix of hard-edged, grungy stoner rock. There’s a good reason they are becoming one of the most talked-about bands in town.
