Local student dazzles at beer pong

Andrew Borys earns trip to Las Vegas after drinking game video goes viral

To most, beer pong is simply a fun drinking game you play (and often lose) at parties.

But for 21-year-old Andrew Borys — whose viral videos show him juggling a ping-pong ball on the end of a golf club and sending it flying with alarming accuracy into a cup filled with water — beer pong is serious business.

“It was always a dream of mine to go viral, so it’s definitely cool to see how it’s all happening now,” Borys said. “Beer pong is a simple skill. It’s just throwing a ball into a cup. I’m trying to take that simple skill and do something people haven’t seen before with it.”

Whether it’s tackling a pyramid of 10 cups or sinking a ball while wobbling on a balance board, Borys seems to find his target every time. Despite his clear talent at beer pong, Borys said it was his love for video work that got him into the art of lager lobbing.

“I started making videos because I was always really shy and nervous as a kid,” he said. “I always wanted to create entertainment videos, and doing videos like this gave me the opportunity to put myself out there without having to speak on camera.”

Borys started filming himself six years ago, and is now referred to as “King of the Cup” in videos garnering hundreds of thousands of views online. His sniper-like throws have even led to international acclaim, with the World Series of Beer Pong in Las Vegas inviting him to play — all expenses paid — in this year’s competition in June.

“I’m definitely really nervous — I haven’t played one competition game of beer pong in my life,” Borys said.

“I feel like I’m going to have a target on my back because of the videos, but I’m hoping when the time comes I can perform.”

Borys, a fourth-year business student at the University of Calgary, said he’ll spend a few hours every day practicing his beer pong skills leading up the summer competition, where he has a chance to win a grand prize of $50,000.
