DRAWN TO LIFE IN BEACON HEIGHTS

Sherwood neighbourhood conveniently connected

- JOSH SKAPIN

The Babbar family won’t take possession of their new home until this summer, but they’re already enjoying the community they’ll be moving to.

“A few times, when we’ve gone to see the house under construction, we would park there and just go for a walk,” says Rajeev Babbar, praising the community’s views.

Rajeev and Rekha Babbar, who have two young children, bought a home at Beacon Heights in Sher- wood. They purchased through Sterling Homes, which forms the community’s builder group with Trico Homes and Broadview Homes.

“This community gave us what we needed,” says Rajeev.

The northwest Calgary community captured their interest for a few reasons, including its convenient access to an assortment of places to shop and dine.

“Essentially, if you need something, in good weather, you can just walk there and get it,” says Rajeev.

This is a common point of interest for buyers in Beacon Heights, say its builders. Broadview’s area sales manager Bryan Tsang highlights the community’s close proximity to Beacon Hill Shopping Centre, anchored by a Costco, and Walmart at another commercial development nearby.

He also lists large lots, reaching up to 38 feet wide, green spaces, and Sir Winston Churchill High School, its designated school, as important factors for buyers turning to Beacon Heights. The high school is about a 15-minute drive away.

Likewise with Trico. “They like the fact that the lots here are bigger, its full of amenities such as Costco, Walmart, City Market, Beacon Hill Shopping Centre, and it’s a smaller community that’s not so crowded unlike some of the other new areas around the city,” says Trico’s area sales manager Henry Luong.

Luong also calls Sir Winston Churchill a “big reason” for families picking Beacon Heights.

All three builders have show homes in the community on Sherwood Boulevard. Trico’s are the 2,515-square-foot Winston and 2,121-square-foot Porter; Broadview’s are the 2,056-square-foot Braeside II and the 2,417-squarefoot Aria; and Sterling’s are the 2,377-square-foot Montego 5, and Beaumont 3, which is 2,280 square feet.

Prices in the community start from the high $500,000s, includ- ing the lot and tax.

The Babbars took about a year and a half to decide where and what to buy.

They were in northeast Calgary, so staying close to the friends in the area was important. So was access to some of the businesses they’ve come to love.

“We are from India and living in the north does give us access to the stores that we like to shop at,” Rajeev says.

“Once you get on Stoney Trail, you’re so close,” he adds. “It takes you 15 minutes to 20 minutes on Stoney and Metis Trail and you’re there.”

But major arteries near Beacon Heights even help them connect to areas beyond that. Rajeev likes how easy it’ll be to get to commercial developments such as Royal Oak Shopping Centre and Crowfoot Crossing.

“You have a lot of choice,” he says.

On the home itself, the Babbars liked what they saw from Sterling’s Beaumont 2. Measuring around 2,700 square feet, the model has four bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms and a two-car front-attached garage. The bedroom count was important for the family, who see frequent guests and host Rajeev’s father when he visits from India for a few months each year.

The kitchen is “very open” and part of a main floor that’s conducive to entertaining, says Rajeev.

“We can have over 20 people on our main floor and we won’t be sitting in different corners of the house,” he says. “We will still be able to communicate with each other, which was very important to us.”
