Jan was born in Vancouver, B.C., but spent most of her life in Alberta, graduating from the U. of A. with a Masters of Education degree. She taught for many years in Alberta, with a specialty in elementary science education, which led to years of involvement with the Calgary and District Science Fair Committee. Some of Jan’s many hobbies involved her husband and friends. They included bicycle and cross-country ski touring, spinning and weaving, gourmet cooking, collecting dolls and toy bears, breeding and showing Bedlington Terriers and Bichon Frise dogs and competing in driving events with her miniature horses. She played piano, autoharp, banjo and recorder, and over the years, sang in many choirs in Canada and abroad. She was very hospitable and enjoyed feeding her friends, who remember many combined gourmet dinners, girls’ nights out doing craftwork, and playing Mah Jongg. Like her husband, Miles, Jan was highly involved in promoting the Friesen horse, and was the president of the Alberta Friesen Horse association for several years. After his death, she downsized to miniature horses, especially Falabellas, a breed from Argentina and became active on the Board of the Falabella Breeders and Owners Society. In recent years, after her sister, Dolores, returned to Canada, Jan had some great holidays with her and they spent a lot of time together, especially after they both moved to Kelowna. Jan is survived by her sister, Dolores Ertl, and many cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Miles Heseldin and other family members. She will be dearly missed by those who knew her well and loved her. Funeral services will be private.
