REID, Michael

August 27, 1943 – Saskatoon, SK April 5, 2017 – Calgary, AB

Michael passed away surrounded by the love of his family. He was the beloved son of Lorna Marie Reid (Hogan) and Ernest Angus Reid. He was predeceased by his mother and father and is survived by his siblings, Jane (Kurt), Angus (Margaret), Patrick, Bill (Sonia), Anne (Kendall), Mark (Sally), and Sheila (Brian);, as well as nineteen nieces and nephews and seven great-nieces and nephews.

Born intellectually disabled, Michael benefited from having a large family and the experiences they shared moving across Canada. He eventually settled in Edmonton where he remained for over forty years. Here, he developed a more independent life style, working for 30 years at Zellers, Kingsway Garden Mall, and, with the support of family, living in his own condominium. In Calgary, where he moved 4 years ago, Michael continued to have family support, and lived at Eau Claire Residences. He loved living at Eau Claire and enjoyed attending the Bowview Manor Day Program, which he called his “course”.

Michael taught himself to read and developed strong opinions on politics. He had a nearly encyclopedic knowledge of the composition of Canadian sports teams and Edmonton bus schedules. His fondest enjoyment was watching the Edmonton Oilers and Edmonton Eskimos, staying faithful to both throughout his life. He enjoyed telling others how well his teams were doing but also let them know when he thought they were “bums”. Michael also had a love of first responders and liked to watch them race by with sirens going. He enjoyed anything to do with travel and went on many different trips with family members. In Calgary, he discovered an enjoyment of cooking, the opera, theatre and going to William Watson Lodge.

Michael always showed interest in others and loved his family and their various dogs. He liked to help others in whatever way he was capable of. Michael was a very loveable person and will be deeply missed by all whose lives he touched. Heaven is a better place for his presence!

Michael’s Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Pius X Church, (2424 - 24 Ave. NW, Calgary) on Friday, April 21, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. Lunch will follow in the church hall.
