LUXURIATE IN THE VILLA LIFE

Harmony home entertainer’s dream

- JOSH SKAPIN

While the stage in life may mean it’s time for a different type of home, the joy that comes from hosting family and friends doesn’t have to change.

A large two-level, single-family home with a yard isn’t a long-term solution for everyone. This is why bungalow-style villas, such as the new development by NuVista Homes at Harmony in Springbank, just west of Calgary limits, is a smart next step.

All the day-to-day needs, including the master bedroom, are part of the main level.

When designing the lifestyle spaces in these villas, NuVista taps its long history as a single-family home builder.

The warm, inviting Cayenne plan is a prime example.

This 1,537-square-foot model is one of the builder’s two villa show homes in Harmony. Its Saffron model is shown as the other.

The villas in this development each have a two-car attached garage and sit on 44-foot lots backing on to a community green space.

While this segment of the market is a common target for couples in their retirement years, the shared spaces on the main level aren’t just limited to the necessities of one or two people.

This home has an entertainer’s heart, and makes welcoming gathering spaces a priority.

Everything comes together at the back end of the main level, with its open-design, airy ninefoot ceilings and soaring windows along the rear wall.

Smaller, but numerous, windows are a source of sunshine from its adjacent dining area, as well.

It doesn’t matter if it’s the beginning, middle or end of the visit, people will find reasons to spend time in the L-shaped kitchen.

Contrasting the Saffron show home’s darker palette, the Cayenne villa commits to a theme more reminiscent of the West Coast.

In the kitchen, the lighter cabinets, counters and backsplash are an attractive combination with the stainless steel appliances, including its bistro-inspired chimneystyle hood fan.

The island is substantial and sits under a row of stylish pendant lighting. It has a sink facing the dining area and an extended eating bar that comfortably seats four people.

The great room stretches across the entire rear wall in a space that will allow buyers to bring many of the larger pieces of furniture they loved from their single-family home.

Its focal point is a fireplace surrounded in tile carried over from the kitchen backsplash. It’s flanked by built-in shelves, perfect for anything from small pieces of art to family photos.

Past the great room, the Cayenne’s penchant for entertaining continues on the expansive rear deck, boasting views of the Rocky Mountains. As displayed in the show home, its ability to fit ample seating continues to be generous. The deck is shown with an outdoor fireplace, meaning even on cooler evenings, it’ll be an enjoyable place to relax.

Scenic views are available from the master bedroom, too. It has a luxurious ensuite with a free- standing tub across from a walk-in shower with a thick glass door, and dual vanities under a full-length mirror.

It then links to a walk-in closet with built-in shelves and a tower of drawers, ideal for tucking away smaller accessories, such as ties and scarves.

The washer and dryer are in easy reach. A large laundry room — with plenty of space to load, unload and fold — sits next to the half-bathroom on the main level.

As displayed in the show home, the developed lower level can be valuable living space.

It features a rec area, walk-up bar, two bedrooms and a bathroom.

Harmony is a scenic new community that’s planned to include a golf course and two connected lakes.

Earlier this year, Harmony was crowned both New Community of the Year and Community of the Year-Calgary Region at the Calgary Region SAM (Sales and Marketing) Awards.
