Special Calgarians recognized with achievemen­t awards

Recipients of the 2016 Calgary Awards were honoured at a ceremony in the Calgary Municipal Building on Wednesday.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi and members of city council distribute­d the awards, including the citizen of the year title to Lucy Miller, the former CEO and president of the United Way of Calgary and Area.

Robbie Babins-Wagner, CEO of the Calgary Counsellin­g Centre, received the Grant MacEwan Lifetime Achievemen­t award; Decidedly Jazz Danceworks executive director Kathi Sundstrom was bestowed the community achievemen­t award for arts; Greenery Office Interiors owner Joanne Young was recognized for commerce; and Cheri Macaulay, founder of CivicCamp, received the community advocate award.

Calgary Corporate Challenge won an achievemen­t award; U of C’s professor emeritus of history Donald B. Smith was recognized in the education category; Alberta Champions Society founder Gordon J. Hoffman accepted the heritage award; and, Sir Winston Churchill High School student Emily Gubski received the youth award. The Environmen­tal Achievemen­t Award was given to Dr. Joe Vipond. Business leader Robert Brawn was recognized with the Signature Award; Joan Crate received the City of Calgary W.O. Mitchell Book Prize for Black Apple; and, the award for accessibil­ity was presented to Studio Bell.
