Special Calgarians recognized with achievement awards
Recipients of the 2016 Calgary Awards were honoured at a ceremony in the Calgary Municipal Building on Wednesday.
Mayor Naheed Nenshi and members of city council distributed the awards, including the citizen of the year title to Lucy Miller, the former CEO and president of the United Way of Calgary and Area.
Robbie Babins-Wagner, CEO of the Calgary Counselling Centre, received the Grant MacEwan Lifetime Achievement award; Decidedly Jazz Danceworks executive director Kathi Sundstrom was bestowed the community achievement award for arts; Greenery Office Interiors owner Joanne Young was recognized for commerce; and Cheri Macaulay, founder of CivicCamp, received the community advocate award.
Calgary Corporate Challenge won an achievement award; U of C’s professor emeritus of history Donald B. Smith was recognized in the education category; Alberta Champions Society founder Gordon J. Hoffman accepted the heritage award; and, Sir Winston Churchill High School student Emily Gubski received the youth award. The Environmental Achievement Award was given to Dr. Joe Vipond. Business leader Robert Brawn was recognized with the Signature Award; Joan Crate received the City of Calgary W.O. Mitchell Book Prize for Black Apple; and, the award for accessibility was presented to Studio Bell.
