Suspect charged in father’s death after body found

Police have charged a Calgary man with killing his own father — and dumping the body at an Okotoks construction site — after investigators became concerned with “inconsistencies” with his story.

Zaineddin Al Aalak, 21, is charged with second-degree murder as well as an indignity to a body.

Calgary police said the 53-yearold victim allegedly became involved in an altercation with his son at a residence in the 200 block of 90th Avenue S.W. in Acadia.

Police were first called to the southwest home for a check on welfare call late Monday afternoon, acting homicide Insp. Paul Wozney said.

“Once we attended there, we engaged in some investigative steps at that time, had a conversation with the accused person,” said Wozney. “We re-attended the following morning to ask more questions and to connect some dots.”

Police allege the victim was killed by his son and the body was subsequently dumped at the construction site, where it was discovered Monday. Police would not say whether anyone else was in the home at the time of the altercation.

Investigators are trying to piece together the victim’s movements in the hours leading up to his death and are asking anyone who saw his 2012 white, four-door Ford Focus with Alberta licence plate L83 265 overnight between Sunday and Monday to contact police at 403266-1234.

“One of the theories of the investigation is that car was possibly used to transport the body of the victim,” said Wozney.

“We’re really hoping somebody has seen this vehicle and can come forward and assist us in this investigation.”

Wozney also said police have seen a rise in domestic-related investigations in Calgary over the past several months.

“Unfortunately, there are domestics that occur all the time between a father and a son, but escalating to this degree is very rare.”

The victim’s name will be released once he is officially identified by the chief medical examiner.

This is not Al Aalak’s first brush with the law. In April, he pleaded guilty to obstructing a peace officer and was given a $300 fine, and in Oct. 2016, Al Aalak was given 36 months probation and a $100 fine after pleading guilty to unlawful harassment.

He is scheduled to appear in court Thursday.
