Find family fun for less at Calaway Park

- ELIZABETH CHORNEY-BOOTH

Nothing captures the spirit of the holidays like spending quality time with family and friends. Calgarians can expand that sentiment into the summer by giving their loved ones the gift of a 2018 Calaway Park season pass, which promises a whole season of family fun.

From now until Jan. 1, 2018, Calaway Park season passes are at their lowest price of the year. Available for just $41.95 per person plus GST, the holiday pricing is 63 per cent less than the cost of passes once the season starts. A regular day pass will cost $39.95 plus GST, so season passes purchased during the holiday promotion can pretty much be paid off after just one visit to the park.

“We purposely priced it this way so that if you come once, you’ve paid for your pass,” says general manager Bob Williams. “This program is our way of saying ‘thank you’ to Calgary and the people who have supported us all these years.”

The pass gives recipients unlimited access to the park’s 30 rides, live entertainment, Cinemagic 3D Theatre and Haunted Hotel from May 19 to Oct. 8, 2018, as well as special events like Rad Dad Day, Grandparents Weekend, Calgary Comic Fest for Kids, Halloweekends and Boo CrewCostume Party.

Pass holders can start their summer early at the exclusive Season Pass Preshow onMay 13, 2018, which happens to fall on Mother’s Day. That’s when they can get a first taste of the newest additions to the Calaway Park lineup including a new ride, 3D movie and four newstage shows.

“Our new ride for 2018 is called the Sky Wynder,” Williams says.

“It’s two thrills in one — you spiral down a 40-foot (12.1-metre) column and then go back up again and again. It spins and drops at the same time, then floats back up. And we’re putting it in a location where you’ll be able to see the Rocky Mountains as well.”

Calaway has also given the grounds a more festive feel with the introduction of Maxx the Robot and roaming costumed princesses.

And a season pass doesn’t just appeal to Calgarians, Williams says, as many out-of-towners also see the advantage of buying passes at the low price. Besides the savings on the park entry, the “flash your pass” program also gives pass holders a 10 per cent discount at selected food and retail outlets at Calaway Park, as well as at the adjacent RV park and campground.

“The reason people from further away are buying it is because if they want to go for two days over the weekend when they’re visiting, it more than pays for itself,” Williams says. “It really is great value.”

For 2018, the park will be open until 9 p.m. on Friday nights in July, allowing families with older children to extend their experience until the sun starts to go down. It’s all about giving families the flexibility to enjoy time together in a way that fits their schedule.

“What you’re buying is an experience,” Williams says. “Our product really represents families spending time together. Your smile is our mission— that’s our core offering.”
