Police nab armed robbery suspect
Calgary police are crediting their eye in the sky for securing the capture earlier this week of a man suspected in an armed robbery spree over the weekend.
A little before 6:30 p.m. on Monday, a male approached a teller inside the TD Canada Trust in Signal Hill and demanded money.
As the suspect attempted to flee the scene, the suspect’s getaway car was picked up by HAWCS, who covertly tracked the vehicle from the air.
Following the suspect to a location near Barlow Trail and 114th Avenue S.E., the police helicopter guided patrol officers to make the arrest.
The suspect is the same man believed responsible for four armed robberies over the weekend, carried out at two restaurants and a couple of liquor stores located throughout the city.
In each of those robberies, the suspect threatened staff with a knife and demanded they fill a bag with money.
Evidence gathered after the suspect’s arrest led investigators to believe the same man is responsible for robbing a CIBC branch in Shawnessy, as well as two additional TD Canada Trust locations on Macleod Trail near Glenmore Trail and on Memorial Drive, just east of Marlborough Mall.
Facing eight counts of robbery is 55-year-old Kee Wing “Stephen” Tung of Calgary.
