Prestigious Midwest Clinic the world’s largest music educators’ conference

Fifteen high school members of Bishop Carroll’s Virtuosi Strings, under the direction of Christina Visy, will fly to Chicago to participate in The Midwest Clinic — the world’s largest music educators’ conference — from Dec. 20 to 23. It is a stunning accomplishment when you know the group is only the second Canadian school ensemble to be invited in the clinic’s 71-year history.

Anchored by award-winning violinist Angela Ryu, the group is scheduled to perform for one hour on Dec. 20, then the musicians will see a show starring trumpeter Doc Severinsen, band leader of the Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson for 30 years. Students will also participate in clinics and workshops headlined by world-class musicians and educators.

“We’re like a family,” Emily Braganza, 17, says about her fellow musicians, who include violists, cellists and a bassist.

Braganza, who sits next to Ryu in the first violinist section, was four when she saw her brother play and hasn’t put the instrument down since.

Tilman Sandvoss, 16, started on the violin then switched to the viola four years ago. A Grade 11 student, Sandvoss is equally pumped about Chicago as he is about the opportunities at his school.

“Students have come here for self-directed learning … it gives them flexibility and has a great rep.”

James Campbell, a second violinist, will get an extra chance to celebrate the holiday season as he will mark his 18th birthday during the clinic. Music fills Campbell’s days and some of his nights: in addition to his BCHS work, he performs with the Calgary Fiddlers.

“It has opened some cool doors. When I was two or three, I saw their Christmas show and wanted to be like them.”

But their teacher knows being part of the band is not just about music. “It is group work. It helps with other aspects of high school. I see friendships develop,” said Visy.

“They have a high level of musicianship and artistry. They come in as accomplished musicians and the synergy that develops is remarkable.”

A Dec. 8 send-off concert is scheduled in the school theatre at 6:45 p.m. Admission is by donation but can be reserved in advance by calling 403-500-2056, extension 227.
