WinSport extends hours this week thanks to prime conditions on hills

Last week’s deep freeze may have kept Calgary’s winter athletes indoors, but warmer temperatures will give them a little extra time to enjoy the slopes this week.

WinSport announced it will extend closing hours from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, keeping the ski and snowboard hill as well as Acura Tube Park open a little later, thanks to mild weather and prime conditions.

Although WinSport remained open over the holidays, it was forced to shut down for a few hours, off and on, due to the cold weather, according to spokesman Leighton Klassen.

“The bigger issue that we had is we saw a 70 per cent drop from the same week last year over Christmas holidays in attendance. Clearly, a lot of people were staying home,” he said.

“We’re starting to slowly make up for it because it’s been just insane” the past two days.

Klassen said the silver lining to the cold snap was that WinSport officials were able to make a large amount of snow, allowing them to open the West Terrain Park.

The facility’s 6.7-metre halfpipe is also very close to opening, he said.

The park’s extended hours includes all food and beverage outlets, as well as its rental shop and retail store.

Traffic and parking volumes should be high all week, and guests are advised to plan accordingly.
