When the deep freeze that had enveloped Alberta finally lifted on Monday, the folks at Sunshine Village saw mountains covered in fresh powder. The cold weather hadn’t stopped the snow from falling, and with 23 centimetre­s of new snow in the past week, the season total has now hit an awesome 360 cm. That’s the sort of snow that will make everyone want to get out on the mountain, even newcomers. We’re only a couple weeks away from one of the highlights of the winter season. The Lake Louise Ice Magic Festival runs Jan. 18-28. The world-famous festival brings many of the world’s best ice carvers up to the Chateau Lake Louise to produce one-of-a-kind works of art from 300-pound blocks of ice. Circle Jan. 10 on your calendar. At Norquay, they’re offering what might just be the best deal of the year. The resort is throwing its second Toonie Day of the season, meaning skiers and snowboarde­rs who make their way to the Banff resort can buy lift tickets for only $2. They’ll be greeted by 24 cm of powder that’s fallen on Norquay’s slopes in the past week, bringing the season total to 157 cm. banffnorqu­ay.com @MtNorquay

If you’re anything like us, you’re already counting down the days until the PyeongChan­g Olympics next month. Fortunatel­y, you don’t need to wait until Feb. 9 to get a look at the athletes who are sure to be racing for gold on the ski cross course in South Korea. On Jan. 19-20, Nakiska will host the 2018 Audi FIS Ski Cross World Cup, and fans can get an exhilarati­ng look at the men and women who will be representi­ng Canada next month. The Olympics start next month, but this weekend, Winsport’s offering Calgarians the chance to see some of Canada’s best gold medal hopefuls in person. On Saturday, the Calgary hill is hosting the latest annual stop on the FIS Freestyle Ski Acro World Cup, and the world’s best mogul skiers will be competing. winsport.ca

The countdown is on to Jasper in January. The two-week festival showcases the very best that Jasper has to offer. From Jan. 13-28, guests can take in all the best art, food and outdoor adventure that one of the country’s coolest mountain towns has at its disposal. Oh, and there’s a lot of snow, too. When you’re celebratin­g New Year’s and you’ve already got more than five metres of snow to work with, any ski resort is going to be excited. That’s the case this year at the Kicking Horse resort in Golden, B.C., where the season’s total is sitting at 523 cm after getting blessed by 29 cm of the fluffy white stuff in the past week. The people at Panorama understand that your day doesn’t end when the lifts turn off. With that in mind, they like to make sure guests have plenty of options when it comes to planning their evenings. The next week features everything from arts and crafts to evening-tubing to video game parties. Apparently, the folks at Revelstoke did something to make Mother Nature happy, because she rewarded them with an insane 80 cm of precious powder in the past week. That brought the season total to 542 cm. There’s a lot to be happy about at Kimberley in recent weeks, as the snow gods have been smiling on the B.C. resort. The mountain was hit by 45 cm of powder in the past week, bringing the season total to 302 cm.
