Man arrested in restaurant faces multiple gun charges

Firearms charges have been laid against a Chestermere man caught with a stolen handgun in a Calgary restaurant over the weekend.

Conducting a routine patrol on Sunday, members of the Calgary police gang suppression team entered a restaurant on 4th Street near 24th Avenue S.W. and asked to speak with a male sitting at a table with a group of other people.

As the man stood and moved away from the table, a firearm was spotted on the seat where he’d been sitting.

It was determined to be a loaded Browning 1911 .22-calibre handgun previously reported stolen from Golden, B.C.

Tommy Tran Nguyen, 28, of Chestermere, faces numerous firearms and concealed weapons charges.

As part of its efforts to target and disrupt organized gang activity, the police team conducted 2,349 walk-throughs of city bars and restaurants in 2017, ejecting 162 people under the provincial gaming and liquor act.
