Updated 2019 Mini Cooper gets more British flavour

- NICHOLAS MARONESE Driving.ca

Mini’s Cooper is getting a refresh for the 2019 model year, a mild facelift that sees new tail lights, headlights and options added to the two- and four-door hardtops and the convertible.

The only real change up front is to the headlights, which now have an LED ring around them which flashes amber to work as a turn signal. Out back, the lighting elements get a more dramatic update: the tail lights go fully LED and take on a Union Jack pattern to mimic the British flag. If that’s not British enough, you can also get a light-up Union Jack motif on the dashboard, assuming you opt for the new Piano Black trim option. A matching Piano Black package for the outside does the same for the chrome around the lights and grille.

That’s about all the updating the interior gets, though, besides Bluetooth and a 6.5-inch infotainment screen being made standard. Wireless phone charging and an 8.8-inch screen will be optional, as will new Malt Brown Chesterfield leather upholstery.

The Mini Yours Customised program lets customers design their own 3D-printed exterior side vents and dashboard trim pieces so they can give their Cooper their own signature touch (literally). The program is coming to Canada, but Mini has not confirmed when.

A trio of new paint options — Emerald Grey, Starlight Blue and Solaris Orange — and some updated alloy rims round out the changes to the 2019 Mini Cooper. Expect to see the updated Mini in Canadian showrooms in the spring.
