RESOLVE FOR CHANGE
New housing for homeless
Homes by Avi Group of Companies has turned shovels for a development that will provide 26 homeless and vulnerable Ca lg ari ans with the permanent, supportive affordable rental housing they need.
An event was held recently to celebrate the builder breaking ground for The Maple, an apartment building in Renfrew.
It was unveiled during a virtual groundbreaking held at the Globe Cinema.
This is the latest development underway by a home builder for the Calgary Homeless Foundation through the Resolve Campaign.
“With the start of the Renfrew site now imminent, our team is very excited to get going and bring to reality one more step on the road to achieve the lofty goal to end homelessness in Calgary,” says Charron Ungar, president of Avi Urban.
“As home builders we are inherently well-suited to provide housing products for our community,” he adds.
“Our participation within the Resolve Campaign provides us the opportunity of doing what we do best while giving back to our community in a meaningful and lasting way.”
Resolve, now in its final year of fundraising, is an innovative campaign that partners with nine Calgary agencies. Its target is to provide up to 3,000 vulnerable, homeless people with affordable rental housing and supports.
To help the cause, 11 home builders have made a $15.4 million pledge and committed to being construction managers on a series of apartment buildings for the Calgary Homeless Foundation and Calgary HomeSpace Society through the Resolve Campaign.
Along with Homes by Avi Group of Companies, Resolve’s builder group includes Shane Homes, Cedarglen Living, Morrison Homes, StreetSide Developments: a Qualico Company, Albi Luxury by Brookfield Residential, Brookfield Residential, Calbridge Homes, Cardel Lifestyles and Logel Homes, Hopewell Residential, and Jayman Built Group of Companies.
“As a non-market property developer and building manager, our strong community partnerships are critical for the work that we do in continually adding to the affordable housing stock in our city and providing homes and dignity to some of Calgary’s most vulnerable residents,” says Bernadette Majdell, CEO, Home Space Society.
The Maple is slated for completion in October 2018. A release from Resolve says the name was selected to “symbolize strength and endurance.”
Within its 26 units, three are planned to be fully accessible.
The building received support from philanthropic donors, the Government of Alberta, the City of Calgary’s Housing Incentive Program, and Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp.
