EDMONTON Innisfail-Sylvan Lake MLA Don MacIntyre resigned from politics Monday.

His resignation came on the heels of his sudden departure from the United Conservative Party caucus Friday.

UCP Leader Jason Kenney issued a one-sentence release on the resignation Friday. MacIntyre sent out a tweet Friday, saying he wanted to “focus on our family.”

The Speaker’s Office confirmed Monday that MacIntyre had resigned from the Legislative Assembly. Premier Rachel Notley has six months to call a by election once a seat is vacated.

Before entering politics, MacIntyre worked at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology for five years as a part-time instructor in the alternative energy program. He also worked as the chief technical officer for a private overseas geothermal company between 2010 and 2012.

He was elected as a Wildrose MLA in 2015 and later became a UCP MLA when Alberta’s two conservative parties merged in 2017. He was the UCP’s critic on electricity and renewables.

He has suggested in the past that science hasn’t conclusively proven that climate change was caused by humans.

The UCP also announced Friday that embattled MLA Derek Fildebrandt would not be allowed to re join caucus after he pleaded guilty to illegal hunting.
