Grozman hangs up cleats after two CFL seasons

-

Roman Grozman is leaving the Calgary Stampeders and the CFL.

The young centre has just two seasons of pro football under his belt.

“As much as I loved playing football, the decision to retire is the right one in regards to my long-term health,” Grozman said. “I thank Coach (Pat) DelMonaco, Coach (Dave) Dickenson and (GM/ president John) Huff (Hufnagel) for giving me the chance to play, and I wish the team and my former teammates the best of luck for the upcoming season.”

Grozman, who was born in Israel and grew up in Vaughan, Ont., was a fourth-round selection by the Stampeders in the 2016 CFL Draft. He appeared in seven games as a rookie during the 2016 season, including one start at centre.

Prior to joining the Stampeders, Grozman played four seasons with the U Sports’ Concordia Stingers.

“I wish Roman all the best in the next chapter of his life,” Hufnagel said. “He showed great determination and effort during his unfortunately brief time with the Stampeders, and I thank him for his contributions to the club.”

STAMPS SIGN D-LINE TRIO

The Stampeders signed international defensive linemen Danny Mason, Brandon Peguese and Kelcy Quarles.

Mason, at 6-foot-3, 235 pounds, originally signed with the Stamps on Oct. 8, 2017, and appeared in one game, recording two tackles and one QB pressure.

Peguese, a 6-foot-1, 255-pound former star of the NCAA’s Hampton Pirates, has 12 games of CFL experience as he split the 2012 season between the B.C. Lions and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Quarles, a 6-foot-4, 310-pounder, played two games for the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts in 2014 and has also spent time with the New York Giants, the New England Patriots and the Cleveland Browns.

RED & WHITE CUT JANKE

The Stampeders released national linebacker Dexter Janke.

Janke, 25, was selected by the Stamps in the fifth round (44th overall) of the 2015 CFL Draft and played 16 regular-season games, one playoff game and one Grey Cup game for the Red & White. He made 13 special-teams tackles and one defensive tackle over three years with the Stamps.
